Community Funds

Overview

The Sedalia Heritage Foundation (SHF) serves as a community foundation vehicle to receive and distribute funds.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for the people of the Sedalia area by providing opportunities for individuals, organizations and businesses to support the community through philanthropy.

Since its inception in 1991, more than 40 funds have utilized this service to channel over $1,200,000 in support of educational and community development projects.

Field of Interest Funds are designed to support projects of specific interest. Fund assets belong to the Fund with distribution directed according to guidelines established by the Fund Representatives and not the SHF fiscal agent.

Active accounts are designed to support projects that have regular deposit and expenditure activity.

Inactive accounts may be established to hold funds for future use.

Benefits to Establishing a Community Fund

Fund Management Options

Fund representatives may select to administer their fund by assuming financial management responsibility of a designated checking account and maintenance of financial reporting.

Fund representatives may select to manage their funds through the services of the Foundation’s CPA. This allows the fund to maintain control over all assets while their resources are directed to their programs without being distracted with financial management responsibilities. This option also provides an added layer of accountability for fund representatives.

Professional Management / Fiscal Agent

Fund fees offset expenses associated with maintaining legal documents and CPA preparation of the annual IRS tax return. SHF Staff manage the Community Fund program under SHF Board approved guidelines and reporting. A CPA firm serves as Fiscal Agent according to generally accepted accounting practices. Both are bonded and insured.

Tax Benefits

Contributions to funds are eligible as a 501(c)(3) charitable tax donation. Purchases made for Fund projects are exempt from sales tax.

Recognition

Funds may be named in honor of family members to be remembered and recognized for years to come.

Convenience

Establishment of a fund eliminates the time and cost associated with creating and maintaining a not-for- profit entity.

Social Media Promotion

Fund representatives can utilize the Foundation’s social media vehicles to promote their projects through monthly e-newsletters and Facebook posts.

The motto of the Sedalia Area Literacy Council is “Building a Reader and a Library one book at a time!” They are doing this by publishing a newborn book of nursery rhymes that is given to all new moms and babies leaving the local hospital to inspire parents to read to their children. They distribute books to children at Head Start locations and at summer free lunch programs in Pettis County. SALC offers grants for updated reading materials and technology to improve and encourage literacy in our growing community. SALC takes books to senior housing communities and the Pettis County jail. Their goals are to formulate and participate in programs that will increase the literacy rate, promote reading, and link local businesses, education, and the community.

The Pettis County Community Santa has been in existence in our community in some form for over 40 years. We are funded entirely by donations and all board members are volunteers. We are gifted with a building so that all donations go directly to families in need. Our goal is to ensure that each child has a holiday experience that is similar to his peers. Our mission is to feed the hearts and souls of these children and their families. Children receive toys specifically chosen for each of them based on their wish list. Toys are selected to promote creative and developmental play. Additionally, each child receives at least 2 new books, and each family gets one or more board games. It is our belief that children who are read to by parents are less likely to be neglected by that parent. Likewise, a family that plays together develops a stronger bond. The families in our program are vetted based of Family Support and Children’s Division guidelines for poverty and their residence in our community. Our numbers vary from year to year but generally fall around 1000 plus children. We also provide gift cards to the elderly and disabled who apply. Over the years, we have seen countless recipients who return and give donations to Community Santa when they are back on their feet.

The mission of the Sedalia Firefighters’ Memorial Fund is to maintain and improve the Sedalia Firefighters’ Memorial, and honor the firefighters who gave their lives for the citizens of Sedalia. Sedalia Firefighters put on a yearly poker run to raise money which also funds scholarships for local students who are pursuing careers as firefighters or in emergency pre-hospital medicine.

The Northwest Alumni Association (NWAA) Scholarship, founded in 2000, is composed of six volunteer members. Their purpose is to seek, promote, offer, and distribute scholarship grants assisting students to continue their secondary education following graduation from Pettis County R-V School District of Hughesville, Missouri.

The mission of the Sedalia Area Farmers’ Market is to provide local producers and consumers a reliable, regulated marketplace for the direct exchange of high quality locally grown and locally made goods. By providing a unique environment, the market strives to meet the needs of the consumer while encouraging sustainable agriculture and small business in mid-Missouri. The market assists in fostering a sense of community by providing a social environment to exchange ideas and learn valuable information from community groups and organizations.
